All of us at Retronyms are excited to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Akai MPC, or MIDI Production Center, which revolutionized music production and has had a lasting impact on the music industry. We are privileged to have played a role in the storied history the MPC and couldn’t be happier for the team over at AKAI Professional. We weren't at the launch party in 1988, but we imagine it was a banger. We thought I'd be fun to use Artificial Intelligence to recreate the launch party. Who wouldn't want to be at this party?!?!

The Akai MPC (Music Production Center) was first introduced in 1988 by Akai Professional in collaboration with Roger Linn. Roger Linn is renowned for his contributions to electronic music products and is best known for inventing the LM-1, the first ever drum machine to use digital samples.

The MPC60, the first MPC model, revolutionized music production, particularly in the realm of hip-hop. It combined a 16-square-pad drum machine and MIDI sequencer in a standalone unit. The MPC60's interface allowed producers to program beats and melodies in real-time using the built-in drum pads, which provided a tactile and intuitive experience. With four MIDI outputs, it had the capability to function as the central control unit for an entire studio setup, connecting and controlling various MIDI devices.

The MPC60's impact on the music industry was significant. Its user-friendly design, sampling capabilities, and sequencing features made it a staple tool for hip-hop producers in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. It provided a creative and efficient workflow for crafting beats and compositions, and its sound became synonymous with the genre. The MPC line continued to evolve and release new models over the years, solidifying its position as a legendary and influential instrument in music production.

In addition to their hardware MPCs, Akai and Retronyms released the iMPC mobile app on iOS in 2012 for iPads and 2013 for iPhones. The iMPC brought the power of the MPC to a new generation of producers, allowing them to create music on their iPhones and iPads. The iMPC featured a streamlined interface and a vast library of sounds and samples, making it easy for users to create professional-sounding tracks on the go. The iMPC Music Makers played a major role in shaping what features were added in the release of iMPC Pro and iMPC Pro 2.

The MPC has had a profound impact on music production, particularly in the hip-hop and electronic music genres. Its intuitive interface and versatile sound library have inspired countless musicians and producers over the years, and its influence can be heard in countless hit songs and albums.

The Akai MPC has been an essential tool for music producers for 35 years, and its impact on the industry continues to be felt today. Whether you're using a hardware MPC or the iMPC app, the MPC remains a powerful and versatile instrument that has helped shape the sound of modern music. Here's to 35 years of innovation and creativity with the Akai MPC!
