Announcing Hook — Live DJ and Mashup Workstation

JP shows off Hook — a new music performance, mashup, and DJ workstation. Arrange and trigger loops on a grid and create dynamic, expressive transitions with the Flux Fader — a multitouch "smart crossfader" that allows you to expressively make transitions between any combination of tracks/cells on the fly. The Flux Fader includes a two-axis control with 9 riser synths, glitch and gate effects, tempo-synced filter sweeps, an EQ, beat drop, tape stop, and filter drop. Combining all these to make transitions is the heart of playing live with Hook. Hook includes a full editor complete with auto transient slicing and waveform editing. Tight integration with AudioCopy makes it easy to drop in your own loops and sounds from other apps.

Real creative power can be found in the integrated sampler — record from mic/line, other apps via inter-app audio, and grab hooks from iTunes and Spotify. Synth for iPad: Breaking Records!

At the end of last week we decided to try an experiment with one of our oldest & most popular iPad apps, the polyphonic synthesizer app called... Synth! In the two years since Synth first appeared in the iPad App Store (on launch day of the original iPad!) a lot has changed in the world of iOS apps & music, but one thing that hasn't changed is that people love playing keyboard instruments on the iPad.

For $0.99, we thought Synth was already a pretty great value. There are plenty of more complicated and expensive synthesizer apps available on iPad these days, and most of them are worth every penny of their retail price. In the past year or so we've been devoting most of our time to Tabletop, but we've still taken time to make sure that apps like Synth, Dopplerpad & Recorder are updated to take advantage of all the iOS updates & new devices from Apple. By making Synth free now, we wanted to find out just how many people out there with iPads might be curious about trying out the app, but didn't want to spend a dollar on something that might not be exactly what they were looking for.

It turns out that the answer to that question is: "A lot!" In the few days since we made the change, Synth has rocketed to the top of the "Free iPad Music Apps" category in dozens of countries around the world. It's currently ranked #1 in almost 30 countries, including France, Germany, Ireland and Canada and is even the #1 app across *all* categories in several countries!

Needless to say, we're pleasantly surprised & really glad that so many people around the world are trying out Synth and expressing themselves musically with their iPad! If you haven't tried Synth yet, now is a great time to give it a shot, since in addition to being free we're also including a free skin pack to customize the look of your keyboard, and we've reduced the price for the patch editor that you can use to customize the sound of all the Synth presets to just $0.99.

A Bug Gives RS4000 Synthesizer Away (to some)

Well, we made a little mistake. Some existing Tabletop users will get the new RS4000 Synthesizer for free. For that lucky group, we hope you enjoy it! For those who purchased it for the intended price of USD9.99, thank you. It's with your support that we're able to continue making great additions to Tabletop. The 1.3 update is already looking killer.

The first new feature is a pitch blend wheel, but the most exciting addition in this version is the optional upgrade for a patch editor. The patch editor lets you change the parameters of any of the instruments available, and you can even make totally new sounds!

Propellerhead's ReBirth for iPhone

As you can guess by the type of products that we develop, most of us are huge computer music fans (in fact, one of our team just finished up a north american tour with Angel Theory and Assemblage 23). So bringing ReBirth to the iPhone was a special project for us.

When ReBirth was released, it signaled the beginning of software-based music synthesis and production. Like the instruments that it virtualizes, it’s a major music milestone. Propellerhead’s ReBirth provides an amazing kit for a musician. I’ll point you to rebirthapp.com for more details. These instruments defined a genre of music. Any music fan should know about these tools.

Not only do you hear 303s and 808s in many popular songs, they are so loved that musicians actually write songs about them, like Fatboy Slim’s “Everybody Needs a 303.” Bands name themselves after them like 808 State. Outkast knows you want the 808 in their catchy song, “I like the way you move.”

Synth - Our New App for the iPad

Ah yes, the iPad buzz is already underway in anticipation of tomorrow's launch. Apple's even made iPad apps available in the App Store.

We're pretty excited about the launch too, not just because we get a new toy to play with, but because we've got a new app for the iPad - Synth!

Anyone remember the Casio SK-1? Well if you do, Synth should ring a bell. It's a keyboard-based synthesizer with a sampler and 40 built-in instruments.

It's also got 5-note polyphony, an independent mod wheel to control the sound parameters for each instrument, and delay and distortion controls. Great for anyone with any level of skill, and for an introductory price of $0.99, what's not to love?
